Purity & Insanity

Profile of Willow

Willow circa S1Name: Willow Rosenberg (her middle name may be Danielle - the scene where this was revealed never made it to the screen)

Nicknames: Will, Willster, Red, Netgirl, Witch

Born: 1982

Appearance/Distinguishing marks: red hair, green eyes

Clothing and General Appearance: Neat, hippy chic. Willow circa Season 5

Dialect: young American, some use of slang.

Family Connections: Mother: Sheila; father: Ira.

Friends: Xander & Jesse until 10th grade. Then Jesse was turned by Darla (1.1 - Welcome To The Hellmouth), and had to be staked by Xander (1.2 - The Harvest). It was her close friendship with Xander that forced her to reconsider her intention to destroy the world when he refused to move out of the way.

Throughout Season 1, she developed a close friendship with Buffy too, much to Cordelia's chagrin.

Romantic Connections: Had two serious relationships during the transmission of the show: the first with Daniel "Oz" Osbourne from series two to series four; and the second with Tara McClay from mid-season four until Tara's death at the hands of Warren at the end of the sixth season. It is also known that she "dated" her best friend, Xander Harris, while the two were at kindergarten - they "broke up" after he stole her Barbie Doll.

She also had an online relationship in Season 1 with a "boy" whose name was Malcolm - unfortunately he turned out to be a demon, called Moloch, who became trapped inside a computer in the school library after she scanned the book in which he was imprisoned.(1.8 - I Robot, You Jane)

She had her first date with Oz, a senior and the guitarist with "Dingoes Ate My Baby", at Buffy's 17th birthday party (2.13 - Surprise), having met him when they were the only two students not assigned on Career Day (2.9 - What's My Line). They continued dating all through Willow's senior year (Oz repeated his senior year to be with her) despite the fact that he contracted lycanthropy (became a werewolf). (2.15 - Phases)

They were still dating as Willow started at UC Sunnydale (4.1 - The Freshman), only breaking up after Oz slept with Veruca, a female werewolf, and decided he needed to leave Sunnydale to "find himself" (4.6 - Wild At Heart). He returned in "New Moon Rising" (4.19), but by this time, Willow was already involved with Tara, a fellow member of UC Sunnydale's Wicca group.

Willow and Tara used their relationship to strengthen each other's magickal powers, combining their forces many times to help Buffy defeat whichever Big Bad inhabited Sunnydale at the time.

In the season 5 finale, "The Gift", Willow took on Glorificus/Glory, a hell-goddess, to get revenge for her having inflicted a serious mental injury on Tara; but this led to her becoming dependent on magick for everyday things, and this led to the break-up of their relationship (6.7, "Tabula Rasa"). Although they eventually got back together, it was only for a short time before she was killed by a stray bullet from Warren's gun ("Seeing Red", 6.18).

Place of residence: As far as it is know, Willow has always lived in Sunnydale. She lived at her parents' home until starting at university, where she roomed with an unknown female, before moving in with Buffy after Kathy returned to her alternate dimension ("Living Conditions", episode 4.2)

Religion: Willow was raised in an extremely Jewish household, having to escape to Xander's every year to watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas". In high school, she studied computer science under Jenny Calendar, a practising technopagan, which sparked her interest in magick, and she dabbled throughout high school.

Willow is now an extremely powerful witch, shown by her confidence in dealing with Glory. She also brought Buffy back to life, and attempted to avenge Tara's death.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Languages: English, some Latin/Romanian (enough to cast spells)
  • Computers/the Internet

Pastimes: reading

Talents (and lack there of): Is a competent computer hacker.

Occupation: Psychology major at college.

Vices: Magick is the biggy. She became addicted in the aftermath of Glory's rise to power and subsequent defeat, which led to the break-up of her relationship with Tara.

Personality: In seasons 1 and 2, Willow was very shy, almost painfully so. As she became more self-confident, she began to assert herself more. When nervous, she babbles.During seasons 2-4, when she was still finding her feet in witchcraft, most of her spells went wrong, although she did successfully restore Angel's soul to him at the end of the second season.

In "The Wish" (3.9) and "Doppelgangland" (3.16), a vampire version of Willow is created at the behest of Cordelia, whose wish that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale came true at the hands of Anyanka, the vengeance demon later to become Anya. It is not known, however, how much the two Willows' personalities would have in common. Willow also suffers greatly from stage fright (Season 1-2) and is afraid of spiders and frogs.
